State of the HIV/AIDS Epidemic, HIV Incidence in the United States

In 2008, CDC released HIV incidence estimates for 2006 based on a new method of determining incidence.

The new method showed that the HIV epidemic is, and has been, worse than was previously estimated, with 56,300 people newly infected with HIV in 2006. This estimate is significantly higher than CDC’s previous estimate of 40,000 new HIV infections per year.

Other findings from the HIV surveillance system estimated that over one million people in the United States are living with HIV. Although there has been great progress in HIV testing rates, approximately one in five of those with HIV infection still do not know they are infected.

The HIV epidemic in the United States is not over.
